Buying Property in Basilicata

Where to buy property in Basilicata
Basilicata has not attracted overseas property buyers in any significant numbers, and remains a largely unknown part of Italy. Like many rural regions, the local people have been moving out for decades, leaving the abandoned countryside properties in Basilicata that overseas buyers aspire to. Situated between Apulia to the north and Calabria to the south, Basilicata has no major cities, though the extraordinary Matera, with its cave dwellings, is possibly its best known town.
What it lacks in these respects it makes up for with low property prices. Traditionally one of the poorer parts of Italy, the lack of development historically leaves it as one of the most unspoilt regions in the country. Those looking to take the popular route of buying a remote rural property in Basilicata and renovating it will find potential aplenty.
With a significant amount of the region designated as National Park land, and a mainly agricultural economy, the region should appeal to anyone with a yen for a rustic way of life and for natural beauty. There are mountains and countryside, farmland and a couple of small coasts – the area around Maratea, on the Tyrrhenian Sea in the southwest has been likened to the Amalfi Coast, but with property at a fraction of the price of that renowned tourist hotspot.
There is little in the way of short-term gain to be made by buying property for sale in Basilicata, but the undoubted rural charm of the region may provide a bargain home for the more intrepid overseas property buyer.
